Topic: Coding

I'm not sure what exact code the engine runs on, but is it C++ compatible?

Re: Coding

OpenSurge is written using C++ with Allegro libraries. smile

Piece of cake...!

Re: Coding

Alright, i need to know that.
Because i'm learning how to use C++ code, only a bit more advanced.
Because for something else, i'm thinking about creating my own engine.
So i just needed to know whether it was or not. (And i of all people should've known it was C++ code.)
Anyway i had to double-check.

And if it's possible to port Open Surge to a phone system or other mobile devices, is it possible to port it to a console?
Or any other system? I know most games and other things use C++ code, so maybe when we have all the valid resources, will it be possible?

Re: Coding

If you're thinking on your own Sonic engine, I would discourage you.

Take a look to Alexandre's code. I've been coding for some years (amateur and also for scientific computing) and that code is AWESOME. Alex is a professional engineer -the Open Surge engine is pretty solid. I think you will need less time to code custom objects in Open Surge than creating a new engine from zero.

Piece of cake...!

Re: Coding

Ok, well i could go with studying the engine more and it's states.

Re: Coding

I tried to code games with C++ and Allegro once. I gave up after just a few days, and this was 14 years ago. The errors I got was way over my knowledge. Fixing one error gave 10 other. Stuff like that. That's why I leave the programming to the professionals who actually knows exactly what they're doing.

C++ isn't the easiest way to get started writing your own games. It's a language that tends to break down more programmers than it raises.

So if you're new to programming, think Dark Basic, Blitz Basic, Clickteam Fusion, GameMaker:Studio, or Construct. Stuff like that. Programs that give you the result you're after.

Yes I gave up on C++ back in 2001, and I'll most likely never ever touch it again. It's simply just not worth it for me.

Re: Coding

Open Surge is coded with plain C not C++.
It will inevitably be ported to C++ to use Allegro 5, unless there is something else going on that I don't know of.

Re: Coding

Oh, i see. Well in any case, i guess some these questions i had to ask.
