Re: [Ideas] Special stage, Sonic 2 style

@KZR

Now I see it. Mode 7 looks pretty good according to those screenshots. I can imagine Surge Running in... what will the setting be? Space? Dimensional Gate like in Sonic 3K? Clouds? Never mind. Will the collectibles be? Rings? Blue Spheres? Gems?

Re: [Ideas] Special stage, Sonic 2 style

i've been looking into the documentation of allegro and found out that allegro 4.4.2 has hardware support right out of the box, but the drawing functions need to be rewritten to take advantage of this. just forcing the engine to run in an accelerated mode (GFX_DIRECTX for example) does nothing performance-wise.

As far as i have understood, a virtual screen, bigger than the actual camera space, is needed to do fast VRAM operations such as blending, hardware scrolling, hardware stretch, drawing polygons and so on. the maximum size of such virtual screen depends on the VRAM available.

aside from the usual request of implementing hardware support for the sake of modding, using it for mode 7 could make it operate fast and smooth. when i think of the current stretching algorythm, it sure makes the engine choke when you are trying to scale some moderately large sprites at the same time. in mode 7 every line of the ground has a different scale, smaller towards the horizon, and all sprites are scaled in the same fashion. we have yet to see how it performs, but we might want to try porting to the native 4.4.2 hardware support, since it does not require all the code to be rewritten, just the drawing functions.

I think the current engine is enuogh to implement a secret stage.
Indeed, I was writing a promise of a level with a secret level (using only the OBJ scripts) but my PC fell down and I formatted it sad

Re: [Ideas] Special stage, Sonic 2 style

What about that rotating globe in Sonic 3. Isn't that mode 7? I ask this since it would be quite a nice feature to have such special levels.

I like Sonic XG's Special Zones better.

Re: [Ideas] Special stage, Sonic 2 style

Time to wake this topic up methinks. big_smile

Regarding spoilers: Take it from a gamer who has been around playing alot of games. A game has a story for a purpose, to guide the player forward, and hopefully teach them a thing or two. Speeding through levels ain't a nice way to go. Specially when it comes to those special stages. No sonic game had warping to new levels in the special stages, and neither should Open Surge. It's like you're watching the first 15 minutes of a hot new movie, fall asleep until 15 minutes remains of the movie where the happy ending is.

Re: [Ideas] Special stage, Sonic 2 style

How about this: When the game is completed once or twice, The Special Stages have a path, that at first is locked off. When the game is completed a certain number of times, The player is then granted a key at the end of the game that would unlock the path.

The path would lead to an alternate end that would send you ahead a few levels (i.e. Sunshine Paradise to Frozen Metropolis)

@S32X From the looks of things you would much rather see that the city comes after the paradise area. big_smile There is still the posibility that this game adds an arcade playthrough, and a story playthrough. And the arcade playthrough hasn't to be exactly like the story playthrough. All we need is a command to check what quest we're currently playing to determin where to send the player next. big_smile

True, true. But again, it was just an example
