Topic: Mechanical Marathon Preview

I finally had time to get a preview made on youtube.

The Preview

It's about time, huh? roll This shows off MANY new objects. Including a Ban Hammer (I'm serious) which destroys all the spam blocks and (ALMOST) all enemies (but no points awarded) in a level to open up new shortcuts. They're usually very, very well-hidden.

Mechanical Marathon is getting completely redone... I'm not sure about the level order but I now know for sure what each zone will be.

Zone List:

Velocity Volcano
Lush Path
Diabolical Database
??? Zone
Briney Beach
Chrome Casino
Droid Line
Subzero Hideout
Arsenal Airway
Urban Rush
Urban Rush Part 2 (Yes, Urban Rush will have SIX acts)

EDIT: NEW:
Green Mountain (Lush Path 2, basically. But there's major differences)
Desert Dunes
Hazy Harbor
Great Grotto

^^^ Added due to plot changes...

And a new story. But I'm not gonna reveal it quite yet (though this time, it is set in stone).

Also: All the level GFX and Bricksets were made completely from scratch by me. xD

Ahahaha, yeah... I know thats yours.

But that's an object. roll

I mean the bricksets and backgrounds are all made by scratch from me. You'll get your credits. Lol

I mentioned that because if we wanted to use the bricksets for official stuff, it would be completely ok since it was custom made by me.

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

LOL. A 'ban' object! roll

hey, this seems to be a fun mod. Can't wait to play it. That grey character that looks like Colin reminds me of Dark Link (Zelda 64). I loved that colorful level; reminds me of Speed Slider from Knuckles Chaotix. It's just the title screen that feels off. Maybe you could put something more besides those buildings. My 2 cents.

Good video! wink

edit: the multi-layered background of the stars looks wrong.

Well, the buildings are all I have for now. tongue Title screens still under construction.

BTW, the 'Metal Team' dies the same way the normal ones do... by falling off the screen. Near the end you'll have to go against the entire Metal Team with only one character.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. xD

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

are those loops in the video grid-compatible?

100 percent!

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

Looks pretty nice.

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

Wow, looks really cool, i like the variations/single characteristics of each level.

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

Really SilverStepP has done a great job he really has the Demo is just a small taste obviously but it shows just a small amount of the great Mod that will be realeased sometime in the new year

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

Why don't you upload your custom objects so that other people can use them?

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

Well... there's a few tiny problems.

1. Most of the objects involve character animations that do not exist yet... (skydive, getting blown in the air by a fan, and frozen to name a few)
2. I'm still testing nearly all of them (the blue and red platforms switched by... switch... is my main focus. I'm actually planning on releasing these.)
3. I want to surprise people with unrevealed objects in this quest (the ban hammer was one of them)... what fun is playing a quest seeing objects you've used before?

However, don't get your hopes down. I'm working on finishing the noise platforms (the red and blue ones). Once that's done... I'll release a full pack of them (not only in red and blue, but there's also black, white, and gray, which ill get into later). I'm not keeping all the stuff to myself. ;-)

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

OK that's fine. The 'noise platforms' are the ones I want to use the most anyway:D

Hehe, not to tease, but they come in slopes as well. You can make loops with them. xD

Also: I'm working on getting a demo out with Lush Path acts 1-3! Since they haven't been truly 'unveiled' yet, it should be a new experience. Oh, and that includes a custom boss too.

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

Let me guess. The music is a remix of Emerald Coast, Area 1, from Sonic Adventure (DX). And I must admit, you're pretty good in scripting, level design, and music remixing. smile

Your teacher asks you. What to answer? Say this:
"I thought the teacher is supposed to know."

Haha, thanks. Yes, that music is indeed Emerald Coast.

Level design? Perhaps. I'm still practicing making split paths and making it hard (but not impossible), but I am starting to get better than I used to be.

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

You guys didn't think I stopped making this, did you? Let's shed some more light on this mod. big_smile

KZR wrote:

i don't want to give away spoilers, but Silver's mod really has a variety of game styles .

Hoo boy... let's start with this.

I may be making a space shooter, a surfing level (on a 2.5d plane with ramps and everything), a puzzle minigame, and even a full blown turn-based rpg system for all you guys know. roll

(though on the turn-based rpg, it isn't going in Mechanical Marathon 1 because I need to finish the dang thing and designing all the enemies and simply completing the thing would delay the game further. I got the basics down; the turns and basic attacks for both you and a single enemy. It works a bit like "Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga", where you coordinate your team simultaneously to jump over enemy attacks and dodge them by pressing their assigned button at the right time.  I even got a team move and a status effect made already. But, like I said, it's not getting completely done anytime soon. However, there will be a sequel, and this will most likely show up.)

Either way, I'm actually releasing a video of this stuff soon. Even the battle for those who are curious.

Also: a note. You cannot Game Over in this mod. I'm going to attempt to make a 'death counter' as opposed to a life total. Why? Because the game is long and difficult. Personally, I don't want to have to start over if I screw up a jump.

Anyways, I'm starting to reveal a lot now, so I'll leave it at this (And, no screens for you yet. Why? Well, do you want me to ruin the surprises I have in store? roll). Plus, I am messing with the rough plotline now, which I'm still not revealing quite yet.

I'm trying to keep spoilers down to a minimum so you guys don't wind up playing a game you've already seen.

Well, I'm feeling generous. I guess I can tell you guys one more thing. If you beat the game, I'm going to attempt to create a simple color-block password system (with 6 colors and a 5 x 5 grid. Good luck guessing it from 150 possible combinations, and I'm also going to do my best make it unguessable from the obj file) so you can unlock something awesome which is.........

.........something I'm definitely not revealing yet. You get the password for beating the game in less than 15 deaths (at the rate the game is going, this is actually pretty strict). Sometimes a 'Yay you win' screen just isn't enough when you did well, especially for a game this long.

Also, I should mention that I'm redoing Lush Path and Briney Beach (the latter of which is nearly done already). The plot and the level design contradicted (The team is only full on act 3 of Lush Path), and I gotta remake the bricksets to be 16s and 32s anyways, because it works a lot better than the old ones. Plus I now have a decent template for them.

Expect another demo to come out around April, perhaps. That will probably contain Briney Beach act 1 and 2. Plus, I have more surprises in store... a lot more. wink

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

Awesome. Are you making backups?

I'm going to attempt to create a simple color-block password system (with 6 colors and a 5 x 5 grid.

we used to do something like that on Klik & Play.

Yes, I'm making plenty of backups (I have so many releases on this computer its not even funny). I'm finally getting some momentum on this mod thanks to your upgrades to the engine. The characters now have their own unique moves.

Anyhow, I'm going to start making Urban Rush act 1. Urban Rush and Briney Beach will most likely be the new demo (Both are just the main character only for now...).

Klik & Play? I swear I heard that somewhere before.

There's a thing called Subversion that allows you having multiple releases of a project in a safe and organized fashion. It means that, if your hard-drive crashes, you'll have your project safe somewhere else.

sourceforge, google-code and xp-dev.com provide such a service for free. sourceforge and google-code require you to open your scripts while they're in development, but xp-dev.com does not.

Personally I'd recommend git instead of Subversion. It's much more versatile and it's what's called a distributed version control system, which means that there doesn't have to be a central server, everyone has their own full repository that can be "pushed" to others (including a "central" repository on a server).

Re: Mechanical Marathon Preview

But that looks too complex for me right now... I don't have any knowledge (yet) on how to program or do anything like this. I'm only good at scripting.

I have backups on flashdrive, so even if my hardware does crash I'll still have it safe in there. Let's just hope it doesn't crash to begin with. wink

Using a version control system does not require knowledge of programming. And they can be used for anything, not just software projects.
