I have some suggestions that you should add some features from the normal Sonic games.
Allow a second player to control another character. Let Tails pick up another character and carry them around. Knuckles should be able to break walls just by walking into them (like a Spin Dash).

Could you please explain in details? I don't see this working properly on cooperative play, since we control 3 characters at the same time.

He can do that in Sonic (3) & Knuckles. It is sometime used to break walls that are higher than the ground.

In Sonic 2 3 & Knuckles if you pressed buttons on the second control you would control Tails something like that. In 3 & Knuckles Tails could pick up Sonic I think you had to touch Sonic's head while flying. You could break them with Knuckles in the game he could break walls Sonic & Tails could not.

But Tails was following Sonic so he could come back quickly if he went out of screen or if the 2nd player left. (And 2nd player's Tails was invincible.)
How would you do that with OpenSonic gameplay ? (As the screen is small, you go out very easily.)

About the Knuckles thing, I still think that using the spindash move is so much cooler. We could implement that (he would break every breakable wall just by touching it), but I think it would be a little boring to play:
That wall wouldn't be an obstacle at all. Let's break it with a spin dash:

I think you may have had to run at the walls to break them with Knuckles in the game he could break walls Sonic & Tails could not.

That's so cool! It would improve the cooperative experience even more! You could use Tails to bring Sonic or Knuckles to places where they couldn't reach by themselves (without using any teleporter).

Well if it were say Hydrocity or Ice Cap with breakable walls, it'd be much more tedious to spindash through every wall that comes within pressure. It's one of the reasons why I loved playing Knuckles through Sonic3k.

As far as I know yes. Perhaps you could have Knuckles punch the walls? I know he has a punching animation. You could have to hold up and press jump or something. BTW could you give Sonic a special ability? It seems like there is no reason to use him. Maybe leaping off walls? Double Jump? About multiplayer though it may be hard to implant what about online play?

He has got some cool abilities in Sonic 3 (depending on the shield used), if you press the jump key again while jumping :
No shield :
(a kind of extended hit area)
Water shield :
(can bounce on the ground)
Electric shield :
(double jump)
Fire shield :
(air dash)

That's a possibility, but it's definitely far from being a priority at this time. Right now we're much more concerned about getting original resources, improving what we already have, adding basic game features, etc. Online play is something for the next years.

I wasn't talking about the shields but about the special abilities Sonic (not Tails or Knuckles) has when using them.

Now you can delete the "New image filter: hq2x" because the site is down > and testing with emulators in old computers this filter slow down the system...

A thing to do levels easy == you or something else can make a "default template" of bricks and a "palette" of default colors, to start making a lot of levels?
(i know how make custom level bricks but to make the game levels a bit faster is better -i think- have a template for the correct size and style-colors of the levels in the main-game)
this is an example - the default color (of course, this are basic colors, is only an idea, i use this to make "goal" and have a lot of cool colours)

I would recommend giving each character a separate sprite sheet. If your going to have teams consisting of a fast character, a flying character, and a powerful character, why not create a spritesheet for each one and place them in a separate folder and add a "Select Your Teammates" screen. Sonic and Shadow would be in the fast folder. Tails and Rouge would be in the flying folder. Knuckles and E-123 (Omega) would be in the powerful folder. I imagine this would add more variety to the game by letting players mix and match their teams.

One problem with Miles is that when he flies, his attack mode is in the tail (on the orgiinal Sonic 2 & 3). Why can't I attack - Lets say the flying robots - while flying with Miles?

in sonic cd plus plus you can 'drop' sonic into a spin if you press down - you could have similar mechanic for Miles.
