How do you like these new building bricks?
They allow buildings with different shapes

Would you please release a preliminary version of the prototype level (what you have at this moment, including .lev, .brk, .bg, .ogg, .png, etc), so we can give a more accurate opinion?

hmm, strange, did you update the pictures? I don't see what you've got in your last screenshot (I see other graphics). I also can't see that blue spring anywhere.

Re: City Chill Prototype

yes everything is updated. that brickset image you have is outdated. save the one in post #1. i could see the updated image right after it was upped. be sure to refresh and clear your cache if needed. i don't know what else could have caused that. neutral

Blue spring removed. it was near the bridge. if you open the editor near it and scroll up you'll see the chain of blue springs

Re: City Chill Prototype

These snow particles look too large, even unusably large on the screenshots.

Re: City Chill Prototype

Looks like Denver, Colorado... Although the blue skyscrapers in the background should overlap more horizontally, as they seem too linear. A bit more thorough mixing of different types of skyscrapers might help. Some of the skyscrapers need more depth, and maybe some at different angles (not all skyscrapers should face the viewer). The heights of skyscrapers should also vary, particularly with VERY FEW overly tall towers, and some shorter buildings. Some rare sky and horizon bits between buildings would be good, sometimes a wide area (like a park). In fact, now that I look at it, your previous screenshot had a nicer arrangement and perspective of things in the background, just too little detail (I actually think it would be just fine... I see more detail in that previous one than this current one).

@ d1337r

Snow particles reduced.
does this look right?

@ J0nnJ0nes

The previous one was in fact better looking, but was not original. it was mocked up from images found on google, so i could be able to script it.
i do wish to add more depth and variety, but since i had enough buildings done, i got rid of the ripped stuff for good. your comment is very insightful and i plan to follow it. thanks

almost every brick. approximately 3/4 of everything.

Re: City Chill Prototype

I can see the graphics improving at each iteration. smile The bricks are not quite right yet (too triangular/rectangular), but this is an engine's fault, which does not recognize pixel perfect collision in 0-degree bricks. This will be improved in the next physics system.

I agree with d1337r. The big flocks of ice were (are) too big and now they are too homogeneous. Donkey Kong Country (SNES) uses a slightly different technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81ZcLG9RkkU (please watch until the end).

Enough talking, now I'll work on the "load level before the menu" thing, so we can make the cutscenes.

Re: City Chill Prototype

And about the background: nice, but buildings are too repetitive. Here is my XCF that is not actually related to City Chill Zone, but uses the same buildings:

http://www.2shared.com/file/iBSoc9sq/background.html

This edited version has a little more variety (mostly recolors and slight additions).

The buildings are in layers "buildings" (close) and "buildings2" (far). You can edit and copy these back to CCZ.

The only thing is: I am more into 8-bit graphics, than 16-bit ones, so the color palette could be improved.

This is a different approach to what i mentioned as dynamic weather. the way DK did it may not even be possible with the way OS handles backgrounds, but it is very close to what i idealized.

Re: City Chill Prototype

You could always use an object to create the snow, that way the zindex and alpha system could be used to determine depth and you could have it dynamically increase the amount of flakes it creates depending on the players x or y position.  This also gives you access to particle creation, which would almost ensure that no two flakes are the same.  If you would like me to show you what I mean please let me know and I will develop the object I have described above.

If I knew then what I know now I'd tell you that the story's true.  Cause whatever you do, it comes back to you.  -Slaughter, Burning Bridges

Re: City Chill Prototype

@ lunarrush

there is a detach_from_camera command useful for that purpose. maybe the dynamic effects can be triggered on collision with special invisible objects (i'm thinking mainly of a way to reduce zindex when the player is in interior sections)
to reduce object usage we should use fairly large image blocks,  i'm concerned about this working with no lag on older cpu's

@ d1337r

thank you. the way you layered them is awesome and they helped me a lot big_smile

Re: City Chill Prototype

My background variation, this time totally for CCZ, with two new Sonic puns: Hidden Palace Casino (complete with an emerald designed to look like that supposedly breakable emerald in the beta of the second game, but not looking like it whatsoever) and Hill Top Hotel.

http://www.2shared.com/file/Td3VKs7O/citychillbg.html

Backgrounds are slowed down so you can see those special buildings only once in a level (that means, no repeats).
Buildings, most of the ideas and the .bg file layout is based on KZR's ones. Of course, anyone is free to use these modifications / put them into the original graphics / do anything, while keeping the CC-BY-SA smile .

P.S. There is a third, non-Sonic-but-another-videogame-which-was-a-Genesis-hit related easter egg. Finding it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: City Chill Prototype

And those bricks are too gray and uncolored, even a little HSV noise would be nice.

Re: City Chill Prototype

Hmmm, I do like the arrangement better now, but I have 2 things I see that could use a bit of change:

-It now seems like you're at the base of a bowl-shaped area or somewhere pretty high. Perspective could be changed with a somewhat different arrangement, as well as possibly including smaller versions, of the same types of buildings, closer and farther away (will take some considerable work...so I don't recommend it till absolutely necessary).

-There are still many of the same types of buildings close to each other (many pairs) and at the exact same level. I see blue regions, green regions, and gray regions. Varying the adjacent building heights, even slightly, would

Re: City Chill Prototype

d1337r you forgot to include the png, or so it seems because the bg here is all scrambled with big black squares

Re: City Chill Prototype

I guess KDE just glitched, cause I changed the background PNG, too, and it really was not added to the archive.
Here is the fixed archive: http://www.2shared.com/file/Jagm9vcF/ci … nd_v2.html
And here is just the background image (yeah, the structure has changed):

Re: City Chill Prototype

d1337r thank you your background looks awesome.just some minor glitches regarding the top layer position where it shows a sky gap between the first and second layers. I think I'll cover it with maybe some mountains or a forest from previous level.

Re: City Chill Prototype

I guess it would be a better idea to move the last building layer 8-10 px lower. And soon the last background layer will follow. With no more buildings.

Re: City Chill Prototype

http://www.2shared.com/file/pRAIQNx6/citychill.html

Here is a new version of the background layer definition file. Now the buildings scroll like they are supposed to. And if suddenly the special buildings will show several times on the background (like in that video), probably the layers should be slowed down horizontally.

Re: City Chill Prototype

http://upload.surgeswarehouse.com/upload/subway.png

Here is a nice sprite I made that could probably fit for City Chill Zone's underground/subway section (except it would need some palette ehnancements, since it's an 8-bit picture and not a 16-bit one, and adding the background color).
