Character powers balancing ;)

Hi there,

Thanks again for this excellent game engine!

I just had a thought about characters while playing it:

- Tails can fly and now carry a friend.
- Knuckes can float and climb walls.

But what about Sonic's powers?
I felt sorry for the main hero to be useful only when a third character was necessary in levels.

Any ideas to correct this?

As for me, I thought that Sonic was all about speed, and for instance:
- Sonic could be the only one to be able to run on watery zones.
- Sonic could be the one that goes to most far away when he's jumping at full speed.
- Sonic could be a bit quicker when accelerating than the others.
- Sonic could go a little higher than his friends when being bounced up by a pad.
- Sonic could go much further than other when running along an inversed floor.
- etc...

EDIT: - I've seen that in plans that Sonic will be able to go through certain doors, and make use of shields.

I feel also that knuckles is missing the power to solely be able to break certain harder rocks,
while being a bit slower than the other two characters.
EDIT: Also, while floating in the air, Knuckles should be able to break obstacles since he's got
fists ahead.

Just thoughts. What do you all think about it?

Or Sonic could request his friends to explore the level ahead of him shown in a little picture on screen while he goes on other missions.

Ever played Warcraft3? You can send out troops to different sections of the maps. Say that you want Tails to do a reconosence flights while you are off to check out other areas. Some strategy in the game. smile

also, while tails is holding sonic, sonic should be able to hold knuckles smile

He has got some cool abilities in Sonic 3 (depending on the shield used), if you press the jump key again while jumping:
No shield:

(a kind of extended hit area)

Water shield:

(can bounce on the ground)

Electric shield:

(double jump)

Fire shield:

(air dash)

Sonic should be able to extend the shield around any close characters, but this should drain rings. If you have 2 characters shielded then I'd say 1 ring per 5 second, if you have all 3 characters shielded then I'd say 1 ring per 3 seconds.

Are you using OS 0.1.2 ? As of 0.1.2, Knuckles can break breakable obstacles just by touching them.

In fact, Sonic doesn't have any cool special powers at this time, but:
- only he can get through the DNA doors
- he's the fastest one
- he's the one who jumps higher
- he's the best for defeating bosses (BOZ and EPZ)

Tails and Knuckles have about the same speed.

I think the engine you've got now already really achieved fine goals and is already very pleasant to use. wink

The idea given above are meant to aim perfection only, and aren't high priority, for sure wink

Some day in the future, I'd like to see some things like Knuckles having the ability to be the sole to break certain harder rocks than normal breakable ones, and Sonic run or bounce on watery zone.
But there is always something to improve, right? wink

I hope to be able to provide patches whenever I get free from other coding assignements.

I was thinking about sonic powers, and I thought maybe he could roll up walls and along ceilings for a short distance. So, for example, by pressing space when sonic is near a wall, he could roll up and jump off walls, getting him to higher places. (You could even do this continuously between walls). He could also roll across ceilings by similar means, then fall off. This kind of fits in with the 'light and nimble' feeling of sonic.

i personally like the light dash... a special light dash invisible 'path' maybe, started with a special colored ring at the beginning and end, and you could place rings in the middle. He could go across really deep pits that the other two can't fly across, and put a area that sticks out at the end so Knuckles can't climb it.

How about making the DNA Door in the form of a rail? THAT would be fun! we'll call them DNA Rails, and making the bricks will be as easy as turning or flipping the picture in the PNG file. big_smile

Nope, I don't think your idea is good. sad As I know, Tails is the smallest of the three. If he had to lift the other 2 members ALL AT ONCE, he won't even be able to fly!!!
