Open Sonic Mod
The aim of this Mod is to redesign the graphics to be less retro, and have a modern 32bit feel. The graphics will be smooth, with gradients, lots of textures, loads of colours etc. The most interesting test is that these graphics will still be limited without an alpha-channel, which will mean that water, shields and other effects will still be dithered - That could end with some fantastic results within the engine!
If anyone's interested, the graphics will be designed in flash, exported as a PNG, then optimised in fireworks before being placed into the game to make sure they are as pixel-perfect as possible while still showing modern design.
Characters will be redrawn, along with badniks
New levels
Music taken from old Amiga games
Opening title of the game redesigned
If this is in the wrong spot, please move it to the right forum - but I will be trying my hardest to keep this project alive. Screenshots are soon to come. The mod does not really need a name until further design choices are made. Comments and feedback are welcome, but as this is my own personal mod they may not be used
Way past cool,
Evan

4 channels of 8363hz samples isn't consistent with your 32-bit aim.

Well, im working withing the limitation of the engine, and i'm no music composer by any means, so i've had to leave it with that. This should also keep filesizes down a little.

Nice project. Keep us informed!
Regarding the songs, there's always .ogg, you know. Don't know if it fits or not in your proposal, but it's a possibility.
Good luck and make sure to finish the project!

Nice one! Well I'm definitly gonna check this mod out more than open sonic itself because I don't have any high beliefs in restricting the engine to pre 32bit conditions. PNG images has a 256 graded alpha channel where's Open Sonic won't support such comodities in any near future me thinks. My point being this: I produce music in 32bit 192 kHz quality so I can master my music at an optimal level of clearity. The files is then rendered to ogg at 44 kHz to get the files down in size. So no need to limit one's creativity to limits that is hopelessly outdated nowdays. What would you do if you had to use a Windows 3.11 (a very buggy 16 bit OS) installation with Paintbrush while your collegues use Windows 7 64 bit and using photoshop? It is like my ex girlfriend who wanted me to stick composing music in Fast Tracker for MS DOS 6.22 since she thought I did a better work that way. Just my little rant, nothing personal.
