Second cutscene
Hello everyone, Alexandre and I are starting to create the second cutscene of the game.
The cutscene all will be made with sprites.
Here is the storyboard:
We'll post the progress here.
See ya!

Just as a side note, Race is the artist and the task leader of this cutscene. I am the scripting guy, and I'll help him make his artistic vision become true. His storyboard, which has also been uploaded to the wiki ( http://opensnc.sourceforge.net/wiki/ind … e_Paradise ), is based on the Game Story.
We're making this public so that hopefully the community can learn from this, and we can learn from the community as well.
This cutscene will appear before Sunshine Paradise Act 1.

Will this be coded to play out in-game or drawn.

According to the Game Story ( http://opensnc.sourceforge.net/wiki/ind … Game_Story ), act 1 starts after the cutscene.

I mean is it a slideshow or will it play out in-level, right at the start and before the level actually begins.

Before act 1 starts, not in-level.

I finished the first Surge sprite
The first picture is the main, the other two are for him to speak.

Can we get the .SPR of these sprites as well?
My two cents: maybe it would be better if this got integrated into Surge's main .PNG, but whether we're doing this or not is your choice.

This is just a demonstration, I'll put them later in Surge's main PNG
What do you think of the sprite?

I think it's awesome.

Thanks!
This Surge are from second frame, when he tells Neon "Do you think That we-":

Very well done. Just a question, though. Here's the place where the cutscene is held, the way it is now (what do you think? it's in dropbox):
Unlike the storyboard, the grass doesn't have much sense of depth. How are we going to make it convincing, knowing that Surge will look to Neon?

So? :
I just increased the grass.

Very nice. By the way, are we going to have the balloons you showed earlier for the dialogs? Or will it be something else? Because if we are sticking to the balloons, they should be big enough to accommodate all the text, plus about 50% of it, as the game has translations.
Offline
Yes, balloons.
Big balloons like this:
EDIT:
How would be in the game:

One question: is it possible to put a colored outline for the text? "Buddy" in the last pic Race posted is slightly harder to read than the rest of the sentence.
Your teacher asks you. What to answer? Say this:
"I thought the teacher is supposed to know."

I agree, it's hard to read. We could put a black-colored text below (and slightly to the right of) the text, like it's done in SD or in the level opening screen, but it still would be hard to read because we would have a white text on top of a black text, on top of a transparent balloon which is subject to different backgrounds.
One choice is: we could take off the transparent part of the balloon, but could be less cute (I don't know). Or we could use slighly different styles of balloons that don't have this problem, like
or
or even some of them combined with other things.
But this is up to Race. What do you think we can do?
Offline
There's no point in it being transparent. The alpha would just eat CPU, imo. I choose solid.

Ok... Transparent balloons was a bad idea.
What do you think of that balloon?:

That is certainly better , though it needs better contrast in my opinion.
It is still hard to read, specially to people who have myopia (like me). You have a small white text in front of a silver background, which doesn't have good contrast. The black text behind the white one helps, but not much in this case.
Would it be possible to improve the contrast a bit?
Cave Story has similar dialogs compared to what you're proposing, but please notice how the reading is more pleasant due to the contrast:
This other game has very polished balloons, but notice how the white text in front of the dark background makes a good contrast:

Can't we just modify the dialogue boxes we, yknow, already have?
